My Spindlitis Challenge Project

Spindlitis is a Yahoo Group.

My Spindlitis Challenge Project is a lace shawl made from (raw) merino
spun on a homemade polymer clay & brass spindle.

July 18 Update
All the materials for my project except my handcards, I left them at home.
Clockwise from left: scoured merino, carded merino, combed merino ready to spin, wool combs, handmade spindle.
The spindle I made for this project with polymer clay & brass. I think it weighs about 3/4 of an ounce. I'll have to check again when it's empty.

Finally remembered to check, it weighs 23 gm or 0.8 oz

July 31 Update
First sample skein:
washed and dried without tension
2 ply, 21.4 yds and weighs 1.1 gm

My second skein (finished last night, no pics yet), washed, was:
2 ply, 38.4 yds & weighs 1.75 gm

YPP averages out at just over 8,400

After a year and a half of not spinning on a spindle I think it turned out pretty good :-)

Wound into a ball and ready to knit--isn't it cute!
August 26 Update

Oops, forgot to include a ruler for reference, but the ball of yarn is the ball in the picture above :-) From the bottom point up measures about 7" so far. This will be the center square of the shawl. I haven't decided on a pattern for the border yet.
September 30 Update
Remembered a ruler this time :-) From the bottom point up it now measures about 12" (unstretched). 190 rows done so far, every row gets longer & longer, I'll be happy to hit halfway so they get shorter again <g>. I think I've spun 5 or 6 spindlefuls so far.

Thanks for visiting!

October 30 Update
From the bottom point up it now measures about 15 1/2" (unstretched) and I have 238 rows done so far. I also found a nice diamond border to use when I get that far.

January 3 Update
I had misplaced my project near the end of November but it finally turned up again just a few days before Christmas.

From the bottom point up (which is left to right in this pic 'cause the shawl's sideways) it now measures about 16 1/2" (unstretched). It's getting harder to spread it out enough while on the needles for a pic and it didn't help this time that I was partway through a row.

I have 265 rows done so far so I am making progress even though it sure doesn't seem like it some days ;-) I just finished the 8th row of holes across that makes up the pattern of squares.
